Why a stainless handle matters
Not every knife engraves well, and the difference is not price. A fiber laser marks steel by oxidation — it heats the surface without removing it, growing an oxide layer that reads as a warm bronze, a deep grey or a near-black depending on pulse frequency. On bead-blasted stainless, like the handle of a Kershaw Misdirect, that oxide is dense and even and the result looks like it was always part of the knife.
Anodized aluminum handles cannot do it. The Kershaw Blur and Leek are excellent knives, but their handles are dyed aluminum, and the laser burns the dye away rather than oxidising metal. You get a pale grey scratch where you wanted a bronze mark. That is the entire reason our catalogue is built around the Misdirect and why a premium aluminum-handled model is quoted separately rather than listed.
One side, or both
A knife with only a company logo is advertising and it gets left in a drawer. A knife with the recipient’s name on the reverse is a gift that happens to carry a logo, and those get carried. We hold each knife in a printed jig so the second mark registers against the first within a fraction of a millimetre, which is what keeps a fifty-piece named run looking like one object made fifty times.
The BlackWash blade takes a motif too — scrollwork, a flag, a state outline, a project name. Nothing is engraved on the edge bevel and nothing we do affects the heat treat, because the beam adds no material and removes none.
