About this piece
Anodized aluminum marks by ablation rather than oxidation: the laser removes the anodized colour layer and exposes the bright metal underneath. That gives a hard white-on-dark image with no grey midtones, so a photograph has to be converted into a halftone — thousands of dots of varying size — before it will read as a picture.
That conversion is the job. Getting a fly-fishing scene, a boat, a skyline or a portrait to survive it takes test passes on scrap, and it is why this piece carries a longer lead time than the rest of the catalogue. The result is a wallet people take out of their pocket to show other people.
